Optical sensors can measure reflected sunlight from bare soil and vegetation to help us study how these things vary over the surface of the Earth and how they change over time. Microwave radiometers can also be used to sense moisture and temperature of many things on the Earth. False-color images improve our ability to understand the Earth's surface.
